Sophie Noel, FKA Magnolia, is a West Coast-born contemporary folk artist who is currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Centred around values of connection and communication, Sophie’s folk music sensibilities are expansive, vulnerable, and innovative.
Sophie Noel released her first EP, Sisterly, independently in 2019. In 2020, Sophie began working with Juno-award-winning producer Hill Kourkoutis to create her debut EP under the name Magnolia, Confluencer (2022), after being awarded funding by Canada Council for the Arts, FACTOR, and the Yukon Government. Confluencer comprises five songs written in the depths of a Northern Yukon winter, orbiting themes of loss and renewal. The songs span topics of grief and miscarriage, to dreamlike stories of giddy new love on cross-continental road trips. Inspired in both composition and production by a Yukon winter, Confluencer is a celebration of contrast.
Garnering attention from CBC Music, CBC North, and numerous Canadian indie music blogs, Confluencer also resulted in Sophie’s signing to Atlantic label LHM Records. In October 2022 Sophie toured Eastern Canada in support of the EP release.
“Confluencer is Magnolia’s second EP, and her first since being signed to LHM Records. This beautiful album features dreamy tracks reminiscent of Diana Krall or k.d. lang. Blending the genres of country, folk, and jazz is easily accomplished here and a real treat”.
